Updated March 2010 below:

The study has been contracted out to the firm HDR/e2M, a Denver company specializing in environmental engineering and compliance.

The “Suitability and Feasibility” part of the study will be done by the National Park Service. This is the part of the study which determines if all or part of the study area is to be recommended for inclusion into the Walnut Canyon National Monument. Only the National Park Service can do this part of the study and exactly how it is done is strictly outlined by law. Some of the field work will be contracted out to local entities, possibly the Museum of Northern Arizona or the Colorado Plateau Cooperative Studies Unit at NAU.

According to Coconino County Supervisor Mandy Metzger, the first round of public meetings on the study will be held during the week of April 19, with 3 separate meetings held at different locations around Flagstaff.

Updated August 2009 below:

The bill passed in March 2009 only authorizes the study.

Now the US Forest Service and the National Park Service have come up with a way to fund the study. The USFS will provide the first $65,000 and the NPS will fund the rest.

To hear/watch a presentation on the study given by Diane Chung, Superintendent, Flagstaff Area National Monuments, and Michael Chaveas, Deputy District Ranger, Peaks/Mormon Lake Ranger District, to the joint meeting of the Coconino County Board of Supervisors and the Flagstaff City Council click here – then click on “item 4”
