Walnut Canyon the Beautiful!

Around 1900 the Fisher Point area looked like this. Note the cabin, the lack of trees on the hillside, and the foreground completely covered in horehound, a weed generally indicating that the area had been heavily overgrazed.

Today it looks more like this:

When it floods, it looks like this:

Many people do not realize that the water in Upper and Lower Lake Mary is the dammed up water which would otherwise be running through Walnut Canyon. Some years when there is heavy run-off and lots of snow the dams overflow and Walnut Creek rises again!

No one knows why this area is called Fisher Point. There is no record of anyone named Fisher owning land here. But perhaps before the dams were built, this was the closest fishing “hole” to town. During one of the recent floods a fisherman was seen fly fishing near the base of the rocks here. This picture was taken in 1993.

Note that the big cave at the base of the “petrified sand dunes” is full almost to the top. That cave is big enough to ride a horse into without the rider’s head touching the roof of the cave!
