What has happened since the monthly City/County meetings on
Walnut Canyon in 2002?
In December of 2002 in an historic meeting, the City Council of
the City of Flagstaff, and the Board of Supervisors of Coconino County
unanimously signed a resolution asking Congress to authorize a study of the
Walnut Canyon area. This federal study is to determine what the resources are
and what is the best method to protect Walnut Canyon in perpetuity while
preserving both the uses and resources.
Every year from 2003 through 2008 bills asking for the study have
been introduced in either the House or Senate or both. However it was not until
March of 2009 that both bills passed at the same time.
On Thursday March 26, 2009 the study was passed as part of an
Omnibus Public Lands Bill. It was signed
into law by President Obama on Monday March 30, 2009.
